Historic Tsunami Strikes Indonesia
In December 2004, a massive earthquake struck off the coast of Sumatra resulting in a historic tsunami that caused over 150,000 deaths and one-half million people to be displaced. Oasis International Resources, OIR, was at ground center in Aceh, Indonesia within 6 days. During our time here, we were able to survey the city of Banda Ache and several villages to the West and East including Lohk-nga, a town of approximately 100,000 that was reduced to rubble. The results of our surveys were delivered to other teams and agencies who were then able to act with wisdom and preparation on how to start the massive relief effort. During the following months, OIR sent team members to assist other foundations in accounting and translation services.
